Our human mandala of peace will send up a cry to the heavens, to the universe. and to the world that there is a better way and we are taking proactive steps to create a world of peaceful coexistence for all. She coordinates the work of over 30 grassroots interfaith organizations doing different social action in the Great Lakes countries of Africa. Despina is a community organizer and trainer who also mentors many in organizational development. Growing up in a continent that sometimes fuses strong customs with religion to deter full women participation, Despina has a passion for addressing issues that support women and girls to achieve their full life potential. She is widely traveled; something that has helped her conceive many life-changing situations outside the box. She is also a contributor to literature in the areas of interfaith, gender, environment and peacebuilding.

Robert A.F. Thurman is the Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in the Department of Religion at Columbia University and President of the American Institute of Buddhist Studies, a nonprofit affiliated with the Center for Buddhist Studies at Columbia University and dedicated to the publication of translations of important artistic and scientific treatises from the Tibetan Tengyur. At the request of HH the Dalai Lama, Robert co-founded Tibet House US, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan civilization.

Thurman is known as a talented popularizer of the Buddha’s teachings. He is a riveting speaker and an author of many books on Tibet, Buddhism, art, politics and culture, includingThe Central Philosophy of Tibet, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, Why The Dalai Lama Matters: His Act of Truth as the Solution for China, Tibet, and the World and, most recently, with Sharon Salzberg, Love Your Enemies. Time chose Professor Thurman as one of its 25 most influential Americans in 1997 and The New York Times recently said Thurman “is considered the leading American expert on Tibetan Buddhism.”

Inspired by his good friend the Dalai Lama, Thurman stands on Buddhism’s open reality, and thence takes us along with him into an expanded vision of the world, whether the sweep of history, the subtleties of the inner science of the psyche, or the wonders of the life of the heart. He always shares the sense of refuge in the Dharma, which unfailingly helps us clear away the shrouds of fear and confusion, sustains us with the cheerfulness of an enriched present, and opens a door to a path of realistic hope for a peaceful future.

She is the author of Lighting the Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America, and in June 2016, Karenna was among 23 protesters who were arrested for demonstrating at the construction site of the Spectra pipeline in Boston.

Kabir Sehgal is an American author, composer, producer, navy officer, military veteran, investment banker, and financial executive. He orks in corporate strategy at First Data Corporation, a global payments technology firm, which completed the largest IPO on the New York Stock Exchange in 2015. He is the New York Times and Wall Street Journalbestselling author of five books including A Bucket of Blessings and Coined. He has also won two Grammy Awards and a Latin Grammy Award as a record producer. He was previously a vice president at JPMorgan Chase. He is co-author with Deepak Chopra of a book entitled Home: Where Everyone Is Welcome: Poems & Songs Inspired by American Immigrants.

Sehgal has won two Grammy & one Latin Grammy Awards, and his productions have garnered 8 nominations and 5 wins. Sehgal is a composer, librettist, and musician who wrote an opera on the European financial crisis. He co-founded an arts non-profit organization that merged with the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance.

Sehgal is a US Navy veteran and reserve officer who served on active duty with special operations in the Middle East, and he received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He served as a speechwriter on a presidential campaign and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Connect for Peace is a public street happening for peace in honor of the International Day of Peace. We invite participants and passersby to connect with one another in a spirit of openness, spontaneity, and childlike innocence. A cross between performance art and a peace rally, these powerful events have touched the lives of people from around the globe.

We take a moment to connect for peace. We take a moment to really see the person in front of us. We say, “I see you” and are genuinely seen in return. The bungee cords physicalize the invisible connections between all people. As we realize how interconnected we are, peace is a natural outcome.

Amazing things happen at every Connect for Peace event. It touches something deep. Passersby stop to share intimate details of their lives. Strangers are moved to extraordinary acts of kindness. The premise is simple but the results are incredibly powerful.

Join others for 15 glorious minutes of Laughter Yoga on the phone as we celebrate 11 Days of Global Unity! Today, we culminate these 11 days as we mark the UN International Day of Peace. When Dr. Kataria, founder of Laughter Yoga, began spreading his vision of sharing intentional laughter, he recognized that Laughter is a universal language and since its founding in 1995, he has hoped others will share his vision of using shared intentional laughter to help the world find peace. I’m SURE I’ve enjoyed laughing with each and every person who has called in during the 11 Days of Global Unity. On this, our last call of this series, we will focus on Laughter Exercises that envision a more peaceful world. As always: no previous experience, no special clothes or equipment required.
